Inspiration for writers when productivity is lacking.
Your confidence is flagging, your inspiration’s not what it was and your mojo has hidden itself away. What can you do when procrastination is becoming too familiar and you want to break out of your slump? We'll look at some ways to unlock motivation and get you back to writing the way you want.
Do something else
Are you looking after yourself? It’s all too easy to get caught up in the day to day stresses of life and to get used to being hard on ourselves. Do something you enjoy – something straight forward like go for a walk in a place you love, take an long bath, go to the cinema or watch one of your favourite comedies. If you struggle to unwind, YouTube is a good source of guided meditations. These can be good when you're struggling to switch off your brain. Hay House Monday Meditations have a great selection of videos for energy, confidence and relaxation.
Taking our minds off the problem and allowing ourselves to refresh can help when we’re stuck in our creative work. If you have the chance, get away for a bit. A change of environment can inspire and get your creative brain working again.
Phone a friend
Talk to someone you know you can trust and who understands you. There’s a lot to be said for one-to-one human contact rather than relying on social media. Meet up with a friend who energises you. They may help you find a way out, or perhaps through talking about it ,you’ll discover what you need to do.
Workshop it
Joining a writing group or attending a workshop can help make you feel more positive about your writing and give you some grounding. Look at local ads for workshops at literature festivals near you, there are more and more springing up each year. These events are often fairly inexpensive in comparison to writer conferences which can run into hundreds of pounds.
Use prompts
Keep an archive of interesting newspaper articles, magazine stories, ideas from overheard conversations, and collect or photograph interesting objects. If you’re stuck on a longer project and need a kickstart, then write a short post. Perhaps this will link in with your main work but if nothing else it should inspire you back into a writing routine.
